2003

During his long and prolific career, the Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) provided answers to both public problems - urban developments, theaters, churches, universities - and private: standard housing and private houses. His architecture is above all Finnish, but his specific characteristics - close link with the environment, human dimension, treatment of materials and ingenious use of lighting - have ensured his notoriety and the dissemination of his work well beyond national borders. . "My furniture is rarely, if ever, the result of professional design. I have designed it, almost without exception, as part of architectural projects ..." If the furniture made by Aalto can only be understood in a Overall architectural design, some of them, decontextualized, such as the chair by Paimio or the Savoy vase, have become world references in contemporary design. The story of this production is also that of the collaboration with Aino, his second wife, although the attributions do not always allow to affirm that such or such piece is the fruit of a common work. It is also inseparable from the work with the Artek company and the Iittala glassworks, which still publish Aalto's creations today. This book, based on information from previously untapped archives, is the first overview of Aalto's production as a designer. It allows to clarify the work of the artist from a structural point of view, his search for new lines and forms, while replacing it in the sociological concerns which always motivated him. This highlights the sensitivity of this architect in terms of design, which extends with rigor and equal quality from the town planning of major projects to furniture designed to inhabit them, from armchairs to glass objects, handles of door to light fixtures.
