1 / Where do garden gnomes come from?
Garden gnomes find their origins in 17th century European traditions. They were used as decorative objects, mainly in Germany. In 1847 they were imported from Germany to the United Kingdom by the British gardener Sir Charles Isham; 21 terracotta dwarfs were installed in his garden. It was in 1872 that the first factory making ceramic garden gnomes was established in the German city of Gräfenroda. Today, this manufacture is the world's leading manufacturer. Germany is the leading producer of dwarfs, with a total of around 2 million per year; they are exported mainly to Scandinavia, the United States, and Japan. Germany is also the country where garden gnomes are the most popular; one in six gardens is decorated with it! Garden gnomes are for some people a real collector's item; they even have a museum dedicated to them, in the German town of Rot am See. Discover the garden gnomes middle fingers on our site !
