1 / How does a neon tube work?
Neons are able to produce a very powerful light thanks to a mixture of different gases (usually argon and mercury). This is why they are often used for neon signs, billboards, but also airport airstrips. When the lamp is plugged in, the atoms present in the gases are excited thanks to the energy supplied, and produce light. If you want to add a touch of modernity and color to your interior, neon lamps are ideal. In addition, neons are very economical in energy, and have a particularly long lifespan compared to conventional lamps. A great lamp that I can only recommend is the monkey lamp by Seletti!
2 / How many neons per circuit breaker?
It is important not to overload the electrical current on the same circuit breaker. If the current is too high for the circuit breaker, it reacts by cutting off the electricity. There is a standard to be aware of in terms of the regulation of low voltage electrical installations: it is the NF C 15-100 standard. All installations dating from 2015 or later must comply with it. Note that each lighting circuit is protected by a maximum 16A circuit breaker. This standard requires in particular not to exceed a total of eight light points for a 16A circuit breaker. Let's take an example: if you have ten light points in your home, you will need at least two independent circuits.
3 / How to install a neon?
When you buy a neon tube, it is usually accompanied by an already pre-equipped strip. In the strip are a starter and a ballast. At the ends of the strip, you will find two supports on which you will have to fix the tube. Before any electrical manipulation, remember to cut off the current. Step 1: Start by fixing the strip to the wall using a level; mark the marks, drill, install dowels, and screw. Step 2: Install the choke in its place on the strip. The choke has a switch function. Step 3: Connect the electrical wires to the ballast. Step 4: To finish, place the neon tube in the strip, and turn it a quarter of a turn so that it is fixed in the supports. And there you have it, you just have to restore the power to test the installation!
4 / How do I know if a neon is broken?
Your neon no longer works, but you do not know if the problem is due to it? Follow these few steps to find out where the problem is coming from. Step 1: Look at the ends of the tube. Are they dark? Then your neon is blown. Step 2: Check the voltage with a multimeter; if the voltage is not high enough, a step-up transformer should be used to increase the voltage. Step 3: Look at the wires. One of them may be broken. Step 4: Look at the neon to check for leaks. If there is a leak, the gas contained inside the tube will no longer be able to produce ions and therefore light. Step 5: Check the transformer; if it does not work well, it will be necessary to install a new one.
5 / Where to install a neon at home?
Originally, neon tubes, which are capable of producing high intensity light while consuming little power, were only used for illuminated signs. But today, neons are inviting themselves in the homes of individuals. It can be installed in any room of the house. In the garage, neon lights hanging from the ceiling provide optimal lighting; enough to tinker with in ideal conditions! In the living areas of your home, they can be installed as a decorative element; in the kitchen, in a bedroom, on a living room wall or in the bathroom, neon will bring a contemporary touch to your interior!
